What Each VapoLung Ingredient Is and What the Research Shows

The blend is listed in descending order of weight. The studies below were done on each ingredient alone; none was conducted on VapoLung or affiliated with it.

1. Mullein leaf extract 10:1

Common mullein, Verbascum thapsus, is a tall biennial herb with soft, woolly leaves, native to Europe and Asia and now common in North America. A 2022 review in Phytotherapy Research catalogs its saponins, flavonoids and iridoids and its long record of traditional use. The 10:1 ratio means roughly ten parts of dried leaf per part of extract. The European Medicines Agency keeps a monograph on mullein flower; VapoLung uses the leaf.

2. Ginger root extract

Zingiber officinale root, the familiar kitchen spice, is one of the most studied botanicals in supplements. NCCIH notes that it "has been used safely in many research studies" taken by mouth as a dietary supplement. In VapoLung it is the second ingredient of the blend.

3. Bromelain, 2400 GDU/g

Bromelain is a group of enzymes that break down proteins, taken from the stem and fruit of the pineapple plant, Ananas comosus; VapoLung's is stem powder. "2400 GDU/g" states its activity in gelatin digesting units per gram. NCCIH describes oral bromelain as "well tolerated" and says research on it is limited.

4. Organic lemon extract

Citrus limon is studied for its flavonoids, vitamin C and essential-oil compounds; a 2020 review in the journal Plants surveys its chemistry and its uses in food and cosmetics. In VapoLung the lemon extract is the fourth ingredient and part of the spray's taste.

5. Organic Cordyceps militaris fruit extract

An orange, club-shaped mushroom, now grown in culture rather than collected wild. A 2021 review in Foods describes the compounds found in its fruiting bodies, including cordycepin, polysaccharides, GABA and ergothioneine, and its traditional use in Asia as a tonic. VapoLung uses an organic fruiting-body extract.

What the blend total means

154 mg is the combined weight of the five botanicals in 0.60 mL of liquid. A proprietary blend does not give each ingredient's share, but the order tells you mullein is the largest and cordyceps the smallest. The ingredient guides go further: mullein spray, bromelain and Cordyceps militaris.

The spray base

VapoLung's Other Ingredients and What Each One Does

Purified water and glycerin

The liquid carrier. Glycerin, a clear, slightly sweet liquid used widely in foods, keeps the botanicals dispersed and gives the spray body so it coats the tongue.

Natural flavors and citric acid

Taste and balance. Citric acid, the acid of citrus fruit, adjusts the acidity of the liquid; the flavors are not specified on the label.

Potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate

Two of the most common food preservatives. A water-based liquid opened once a day needs them to stay fresh for the life of the bottle.

No caffeine, sugar or stimulant is listed, and no menthol, camphor or eucalyptus oil is named. The word "organic" on the label refers to the lemon and the cordyceps.

FAQ

VapoLung Ingredients: Frequently Asked Questions

What are the ingredients in VapoLung?

Per 4 sprays (0.60 mL): a 154 mg proprietary blend of mullein leaf extract 10:1, ginger root extract, bromelain stem powder (2400 GDU/g), organic lemon extract and organic Cordyceps militaris fruit extract. Other ingredients: purified water, glycerin, natural flavors, citric acid, potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate.

How much mullein is in VapoLung?

The label gives the blend total, 154 mg, not each ingredient's share. Mullein is listed first, so it is the largest part of the blend.

What does 10:1 mean on mullein leaf extract?

It is the extraction ratio: about ten parts of dried mullein leaf went into each part of extract, so the extract is concentrated.

What does 2400 GDU/g mean on bromelain?

GDU stands for gelatin digesting units, the standard measure of bromelain's enzyme activity. 2400 GDU per gram is the activity of the bromelain powder used in the blend.

Does VapoLung contain menthol or eucalyptus?

No menthol, camphor or eucalyptus oil is named on the label. The flavor comes from the lemon extract and unspecified natural flavors.

Does VapoLung contain caffeine or sugar?

No caffeine, sugar or stimulant is listed. The sweetness comes from glycerin.

Does VapoLung contain alcohol?

No alcohol is listed among the ingredients. The base is purified water and glycerin.

Is VapoLung organic?

Two of its ingredients are labeled organic: the lemon extract and the Cordyceps militaris extract. The product as a whole is not labeled organic.

Is there pineapple in VapoLung?

Bromelain is made from the stem of the pineapple plant. If you avoid pineapple, read the label and check with a doctor first.

Is VapoLung the same formula as BreathiZen?

The two list the same five botanicals; VapoLung prints its 154 mg blend total, while BreathiZen's website shows no amounts. See the comparison page.
